『EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM MENACE』の米国ハードカバー・バージョンは、誰が思いついたのかメイン・キャラクターの写真をモチーフに全4種のバリエーションが用意されるという、ファン泣かせな前代未聞の展開となった。但し中身はすべて同じもので、書籍番号も同じである。アマゾンや書店で予約した人はどのバージョンが来るのかドキドキものだったのでは？また、中身も確認せずに4冊とも買って失敗した人も少なからずいるはずで…。日本国内でも米国方式に則って3種のバリエーションが用意されたが、その違いは表紙中央3cm角ほどの小さな写真のみであった。ちなみに米国版は背表紙もそれぞれ異なり、アナキン・スカイウォーカー／ワトー、クィーン・アミダラ・パドメ／ジャー・ジャー・ビンクス、オビ=ワン・ケノービ／ヨーダ、ダース・モール／ダース・シディアスの写真がそれぞれ刷られている。
